Now using the Disqus commenting service

I didn’t want to disable commenting on our blog, however the proportion of spam to legitimate comments was horrendous. In order solve this problem and take the burden of self managing the commenting system away from us we have implemented the Disqus commenting service.

So let those comments flow safe in the knowledge that the trolls won’t hide your voice. We might, but they won’t.

UPDATE: Due to an upgrade we kind of lost the link to Disqus and we are not in too much of a hurry to re-enable it.

    It allows me to comment unregistered without my real name and without my own email address. How does that stop spam?

    How come you get a “horrendous” proportion of spam comments? Oh, maybe because you only got one legitimate comment in 6 months!

    Anyway, say something outrageous and you may get more comments.

    I like not having to enter a captcha string.

    My judgment is not final, I am still learning the system.

    But my initial thoughts are that it is very good but with a few weak points.

    There are too many good points to list – so I will just liost the bad points:
    * No captcha makes spam botting easy.
    * Lost password recovery allows one to bug any other user because you just enter a valid user name and it sends them a password recovery email.
    * It forks your blog to the Disqus website
    * It is NOT a simple commenting system – in fact it is the most complex commenting system I have ever seen. Only bad because of my preference for simplicity.

    The best feature, I think, is that you have one 'profile' that you use to comment on any blog that uses Disqus.

    Disqus may not actually reduce he amount of spam a blog gets, but it makes managing it easier. You can set the preferences to allow only registered users too.

    Disqus also has a lot of social media advantages for networking with liked minded people.

    I think Disqus is going to be the next best thing in commenting. It's great at stopping spam !
